Blogger's Quilt Festival 2010
This is my first time to enter a quilt in the BQF. It has been so much fun looking at all the quilts that are entered...so much diversity and some amazing pieces. I am submitting 'Bill's Quilt' this year. It is quite different from the other entries I have seen but has a nice story.
I am not new to quilting but only in the past couple of years have I been seriously trying to improve my skills. This quilt was completed probably 10 years ago and started about 20 years ago. (Yes, let's just say I was not very experienced with a few things and spent a lot of time redoing, getting frustrated, and putting it away for months at a time.)
When my son was 14, he was home from school for a couple of weeks with pneumonia. He was really bored and this was before the multi-channel capabilities we have now with cable and satellite TV. We were watching a quilting show on PBS...Kaye Wood, I think. She was making a quilt from old blue jeans. He said, 'I would like to have a quilt like that.' (It's probably the first time he had ever uttered the word 'quilt' or acknowledge that I liked to sew!)
So I started collecting his outgrown jeans (designer jeans were all the rage in his school) and his shirts too. There was a disparity in the weight of the fabrics I was trying to combine and it literally took me years to figure out how to deal with it. (Again, this was before we used the internet constantly and before quilt blogs and blog friends who I could commiserate with.) I like how it finally turned out. It lives on a shelf somewhere in his closet now! LOL!

When a boy says "quilt" definitely make him one. Wonderful story to go with it.
What a wonderful story and a great quilt - I'm still waiting for my son (25) to tell me what sort of quilt he'd like, all he knows is what he doesn't want!
What a great story and a bonding moment between mother and son!
nice design and nice story.
The moment of epiphany when our kids realize we quilt is so special. Thanks for sharing your story.
I love your quilt! What a great mama you were to do that for your son! When my baby was @ 8, he said he wanted me to make his first baby a quilt, I know, very precocious child. It was/is the ugliest thing ever. He is now 31, I thought he forgot about it, but it is now being lovingly used for his first baby girl. He does love it, I don't know why. Your son might just surprise you someday with his. I really liked your story with it too. Thank you for sharing, Elaine
I think it's great and you know that I like denim quilts. My denim quilt is on the floor wadded up by Brian's younger brother 'cause I told him it was too hot for it and I haven't gone in and cleaned his room for a bit.
Brian died of cancer 10 years ago, at 16. I should have somehow inferred that in my posting;
I love your denim quilt! And how great that your son asked you to make it for him. (My son never really asked for a quilt, but he got one anyway!)
I sure understand about getting in over one's head with something beyond our current skill level. I have a quilt it took me 10 years to make. I had to wait for my skills to catch up to my vision. It was worth it in the end!
A very fun quilt! Lovely to see those pockets in there. Thank you for sharing the story...
; )
Kids! I love how you used different parts of the jeans. It adds dimension.
great quilt and story!
love the look and wonderful feel of the quilt, but the story makes it even better.
great denim quilt! thanks for posting it!
Great story, and great quilt! And timely; I am in the process of cutting up jeans for sewing into quilts right now!
what a fun story and how great your son wanted you to make something for him. love how you've put it together. my daughter did something similar but with much smaller pieces. this is nice for the big pieces you've used. thanks for sharing and come visit if you get a chance
